Lost: The Finale

*Note if you haven’t already seen the finale episode then stop reading now! Spoilers ahead*

For the past six years I have been glued to my tv during each episode of Lost.  I can remember the summer before it had started and seeing the previews and thinking, “I can’t wait to see that show.”  It truly never disappointed me.  The constant lingering mysteries.  The teasing of some answers that only led to more questions.  Its really what captivated me.

It all came to an end last night during their 2 1/2 hour finale.  Bittersweet.  Excited to see how it ends but sad that its ending forever.  People had their own theories about what was really going on.  But I love how they ended it.

The island was real.  Everything that happened on the island was real.  It was the sideways flash that we were introduced to this year that was purgatory.  To me, that was genius.   So all those earlier theories of the island being purgatory or something similar proved to be completely wrong.

Christian Shephard (Jack’s dad) said it best to Jack “The most important part of your life was the time that you spent with these people.  You needed all of them and they needed you.” He also mentioned that some of the people in the room had died before him and after him, just proving once again that their island lives did indeed exist.  So they spent however long they needed to in this sideways world (purgatory) to finished their unresolved issues until they remembered their island memories and were able to let go and move on.  I loved how they all gathered in the church to move on together.  And Ben and Hurley’s conversation about Ben being a great number 2 and Hurley being a great number 1 just proves that they did live on the island for a while afterwards.  And Ben apologizing to Locke.  Redemption. And sure there are still some lingering questions but it wouldn’t be Lost without them.  But I strongly feel that everything we needed to know, we know.

I loved seeing some of the old characters come back too.  Shannon and Boone especially.  And the closing scene with Jack dying on the island with Vincent laying next to him, as he watched the plane carrying Kate, Sawyer and Claire on it….so sad.  I have to admit, the moment Jack saw his father in the church and the whole thing started to tie together, I cried like a baby.

I thought this was the best outcome for the show.  They ended it perfectly and I am completely satisfied.  My hat goes off to you Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse for giving me an amazing adventure to watch for 6 years.

Thank you Lost.

I’m so confused. I don’t really “get it.” How was the sideways world the purgatory? Kate, Sawyer, Claire – they got off the island in the plane so why were they in the sideways world if they got off the island alive? Is Hurley still on the island in Jacob’s place? It was too confusing. But I did cry a lot, particularly when Kate delivered Aaron once again and Charlie and Claire remembered. Shannon and Sayid were a wonderful reunion as well. How come Charlotte, Dan and Miles didn’t move on? I’ll be pondering this ending for the next 6 years!

The purgatory/ sideways flash didn’t happen in real time with the island. It happened after everyone had died. Yes, kate, sawyer, and claire got off the island and probably lived their lives. And when Hurley said to Ben, “you were a great number 2,” and Ben said “and you were a great number 1.” Implies that they were on the island doing the job of Jacob for a long time. And Christian Shephard told Jack in the church that some of the people died before him and some died after.
