I Hate Cop Killers

The recent attack on sunday morning in Washington that left 4 police officers dead really hits home to me.  Not that I live anywhere near Washington, I’m actually on the other side of the country, but I happen to be the only one in my family that is not a cop.  Literally.  And I’ll probably end up married to one too!

My mother, step-father, uncle, grandfather…all state troopers.  My younger brother, a Boston cop.  I, however, went a different route…as you all know.  My mother always jokes, “Could you imagine Nicole a cop?” and ” Nicole’s way too nice to be a cop.”  I don’t have the personality or the galls to be one.  It takes a certain type of person to do it, just like it takes a certain kind of person to work in an O.R. too.  But, my whole family can sit around at holidays and talk cop shop except me.  But its fine, i don’t mind.  I actually love hearing the stories.

My biggest fear growing up was that my mother would be killed in the line of duty.  Now, my mother is no bigger than i am.  She’s about 5’3″ and probably weighs around 110lbs but she is tough as nails.  Seriously, I’d be more afraid of her pulling me over than anybody else.   But I was always afraid that she wouldn’t come home from work, it was really hard for me when i was younger.  My mother is now retired and stays at home with my other younger brother and sister.

So when I first heard about the four officers being shot, my heart sank.  And when I heard that a woman was one of the officers…it hit me even deeper.  My biggest fear as a child, now just became some other children’s reality.  And that breaks my heart.  Whenever I hear of cops being killed on the job it always hits home with me.  That could easily be a member of my family.  And I honestly feel for their families.

My thoughts and prayers go out to each member of all four of those officers families.   And yes, I despise cop killers.

Nicole I can relate. When I heard this, my heart sank. Not just a little. Being married to a cop and being reminded that my husband can be doing something so small and be killed. I feel for military families but I think police officers and their families don’t get the recognition they deserve. They put their lives in danger every day and don’t know if the 80 year old woman they are pulling over for a busted headlight is going to be the last person they will see. What about the 17 year old kid that is being pulled over for something minor. That’s what happened here. This weekend we had a 17 year old kid pull a weapon on an officer. The officer reacted quickly and shot the kid. You NEVER know! I just pray everyday that I won’t be left a widow and my kids will have their dad to play with their own kids one day. I feel NO MERCY for people that kill cops or even threaten their lives!

PS Stoney’s life was threatened his first week on the job because he was DOING HIS JOB. Getting a drunk driver off the street. The guy told him that he will shoot him one day on his front door step. I’m praying that he rots in jail!

  2. This hits home for me too – my husband is a cop. It is horrible that there is no regard for their lives, that the family never knows if they will come home each night. Early this year, four officers were shot and killed in Oakland, California and that really hit home for us. The funeral was heart wrenching, as were the other funerals we have been to for fallen officers. Unfortunately it happens way too often. My thoughts and prayers go out to their families.

I live only 3 miles away from where it happened and drive by it everyday. I was devastated to hear about it. It is a complete tragedy. I am just glad that the man that did it is now dead. Just a month ago the same thing happened in Seattle with one more slain officer. Police officers are brave men and women that often don’t get the credit that they deserve. Please thank your police officer husbands and family for protecting us every day. They are true heroes.

Well said girl… It freaks me out. My hubby is NOT a State trooper but works for them… all his life… we have so many friends who are cops and it scares me. Same goes for Firefighters. Not the same thing but close. I freak out every time I hear about things like this…. prayers go out to the families!
