Homework Boycott

I am against homework.  There I said it!  But before  you go getting your panties in a wad, hear me out.   In highschool I didn’t believe in it….I was such a rebel, or so I thought.   Now that my son is in second grade you would think i would have a different attitude.

Yeah, not even close.  I think i despise homework even more now that I am a parent than I did when I was a kid.  Its just as much punishment for me as it is for him.  Haven’t I been punished enough? He comes home and doesn’t understand the homework so now I’m left trying to figure out what the hell it is.  His homework each night is to do his spelling list twice, a math worksheet, and read for 20 minutes.  Not too bad right?  Okay, except here’s MY homework:  I have to go in(under each day and assignment), and I have to fill out a slip every night for his reading that includes his name, his teachers name, title of the book, my signature, and whether the book was “just right, too easy, or too hard.”

So, i get a note sent home yesterday…the third week of school, saying how Hunter didn’t get full credit for his homework last week because I didn’t fill out one of the reading slips.  Well I’m sorry but I work 3 nights a week, so if his grandparents forget to fill out a slip, tough shit!  Now, i have to go through all his homework in the morning  and check it off here, sign there, and fill this out.  Pain in my ass!!  Thursday night is open house at school and I might just tell his teacher to SUCK IT!

Ohhh and I can’t wait for projects. Yippee!

My thoughts: schoolwork should stay in school, period!

  1. I totally agree. It’s a royal pain in the you know what! Half the time my kids don’t understand what they’re supposed to do, so I’m stuck figuring it out and explaining. Isn’t that what teachers are paid for?

OMG I couldn’t agree more w/ you about the homework, especially those fun school projects. LOL Not so sure how telling the teacher to suck it will go over — you might both end up in detention. Hee hee :)

  3. The school my boys go to is a Charter school that feels if there is homework then the teachers have not done their jobs! As my oldest moves up, he is now in 6th grade they do send home some homework to prepare them for high school but it is only like 20 minutes worth!

Dont even get me started. My 2nd grader has about the same amount of homework as Hunter… (he stays after a few days a week for after school programs so they help him with some of it…) and Jojo ( my 4th grader ) has almost an hour and a half of homework per night… and my teen… last night she worked quietly for 2 hours at the kitchen table on all her homework… about 30 minutes each subject… craziness!!

  5. Jenn says:

Holy crap are you my twin ? I say all the time I hated homework when I was in school and now doing it with 3 kids for the last 10 years or so I hate homework even more now then I did then… it drives me crazy fighting with them to do it , do it right or just to even bring it home !

  6. Melinda says:

I also HATE homework. I hated homework when I was in school and hate it with my kids too. They just spent 8 hours in school why didn’t they get this work done during that time.
